Mercedes-Benz SLS

Mercedes-Benz SLS

The marriage between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren has been something of a disappointment. Their co-created product, the SLR McLaren, has never met sales expectations, and its marketers have resorted to increasingly gimmicky special models in order to reach their contractually obligated goal of 4000 total units. There's been the convertible, the 722 edition, and most recently the totally topless, essentially windshield-less, and all but pointless SLR Stirling Moss, which is the final special edition before SLR production shuts down forever later this spring.

Mercedes has finally announced its next supercar, which will reach showrooms in 2010. As detailed in the pages of Automobile Magazine more than 2 years ago, the new ultimate sports machine, the SLS AMG, is a modern-day take on the classic Gullwing of the 1950s. In contrast to the SLR, McLaren is not a part of the project, which is instead being engineered entirely by Mercedes' long-time in-house tuner, AMG.

With the SLS, AMG for the first time ever is responsible for the development of an entire vehicle, and the new Gullwing is an ambitious, ground-up effort. The car uses an aluminum body draped over an aluminum spaceframe chassis, which is a first for Mercedes-Benz. The extensive use of lightweight metal helps it reach a target curb weight of 3571 pounds. And, of course, the two-seater will use the characteristic gullwing doors, made famous by the Mercedes 300SL more than fifty years ago.

The new car uses the familiar 6.2-liter AMG V-8, set back behind the front axle. Here it will produce 563 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 38 hp and 15 pound-feet compared to the current V-8. AMG claims that the handbuilt engines have more than 120 new parts, largely in the intake and exhaust system, the dry sump lubrication system, and the crank mechanism. The engine is also lighter (only 454 lbs), due in part to the use of aluminum instead of steel for the crankcase and the engine bolts, forged rather than cast pistons, and a magnesium intake manifold. The dry sump lubrication system uses a remote reservoir, eliminating the oil pan and allowing for a lower profile.

The chassis uses aluminum double wishbones at all four wheels and composite brakes--or optional ceramic composite brakes (with telltale gold calipers)--to help keep the SLS on the road. Massive, 265/35 R19 front and 295/30 R20 rear Michelin Pilot Super Sports tires provide the grip--as much as 1.2g in lateral acceleration.

AMG is predicting a 3.8 second 0-to-62 mph sprint, and 0-to-124 mph in less than 12 seconds. As to the Nurburging lap time, AMG engineers would only say that it is "well under" 8 minutes. The top speed is electronically limited to 196 mph--oh, and the fuel economy rating is 18 mpg combined (Euro cycle), as if any buyers will care.

Look for the SLS AMG to appear undisguised at the Frankfurt auto show this fall, and to rumble into Mercedes-Benz dealerships in April 2010. Compared to the SLR, which runs nearly $500,000, the currently estimated price looks to be a relative bargain at around $250,000, but --- even though production volume hasn't yet been announced --- we're guessing the new Gullwing will be a lot harder to come by.

Aston Martin One-77

Final Aston Martin One-77 Design Released, Awards Start Pouring In
The Aston Martin One-77 has been a long time coming. The super-expensive British supercar has been teased and teased, Aston even having gone so far as showing the car's form on the auto show circuit, only leaving it under a cloth throughout the show. Aston Martin set up a dedicated website for the most powerful production Aston Martin ever, which can still be found at www.one-77.com. In March we got One-77 technical specs and pre-production performance numbers. Now the cat is finally out of the bag, with Aston's showing of the final One-77 production car design at the Italian Concorso D’Eleganza Villa D’Este design-centric autoshow.

Carrying a base price of a cool EU 1 million and headed for final production in a limited run of only 77 units, the One-77 is undoubtedly targeted at the type of attention-seeking car customer probably not too affected by the global economic recession currently gripping the auto industry as a whole.

Aston Martin's full design muscle was directed toward the One-77's development, being the first truly all-new Aston model in years. The proof is in the pudding, as the Aston Martin One-77 production model just won one of the industry's most coveted design awards, the Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award for Concept Cars and Prototypes at Como Lake, Italy.

Let's talk numbers. The One-77 carries a 6.0 liter V12 tightly based on the powerplants used in the V12 Vanquish and newer V12 Vantage, but reengineered completely for this application to produce more than 700 horsepower. Aston Martin says the One-77 was developed with DTM series race cars in mind, and if the new supercar proves as capable on the road as it looks on paper, those 77 examples should be snapped up real quick.

All that power is thrust upon the poor rear wheels through a new 6 speed true sequential manual unit Aston promises will trickle down through the rest of its product line. The striking 20 inch wheels, carrying huge Pirellis 335mm across out back, wrap new Carbon Ceramic Matrix brake technology which promises increased cooling by transmitting less kinetic energy as heat through the brake fluid and system.

With a promised curb weight of around 1500kg, the One-77 will do the 0-60 run in less than 3.5 seconds, with a top speed in excess of 200 mph. Due to the car's rarity, expense and beauty, your average Aston Martin One-77 owner will probably never have enough road to hit 150 let alone 200 mph or a race track. In an auto industry finding 100-year-old companies suddenly going bankrupt, is the One-77 at all relevant?

Official Aston Martin press documents speak of "extraordinary workmanship and money-no-object commitment to quality". It is a safe bet Aston will lose money on this car, but if the British marque can financially weather this storm and continue to make truly exceptional sports and GT cars, the real winners are the well-heeled enthusiast community. Three press releases follow detailing every aspect of the One-77 experience.

Concept Cars: Ferrari V4

The Ferrari V4 superbike concept is a design created independently of Ferrari by Israeli designer Amir Glinik.

While the styling of the Ferrari V4 motorcycle might be controversial to say the least, it certainly stands out from the crowd. And in part that's what a Ferrari is supposed to do. The aesthetics of the Ferrari V4 motorbike have been influenced by both classic and modern Ferrari vehicles, but revised and repackaged into a motorcycle.

Under the highly curvaceous bodywork of the Ferrari V4 motorcycle is, unsurprisingly a V4 engine. This unit is derived from the Ferrari Enzo V12 block, which has been cut down and redesigned into a V-four cylinder configuration. The engine features ride-by-wire throttle control and is mated to a mono-block gearbox that support the swing arm.

One of the more unusual features of the Ferrari V4 superbike is is adjustable ride-height suspension and dampening control. Riders can choose from two separate ride heights and two shock damping styles for each ground clearance setting.

The brakes of the Ferrari V4 superbike concept consist of radial mounted discs and twin calipers up front. Both front and rear brakes are electronically operated and computer controlled to provide optimal braking under all road and weather conditions.

A weatherproof touch screen display is mounted flush into the top of the fuel tank, directly in front of the rider. From this interface the rider can manage bike systems or monitor information and
diagnostic information, including; radio, GPS, anti-theft device, RPM, speed, and current gear.

Concept Cars: BMW T1 Motorsport

The BMW T1 Motorsport concept is a creation of Miroslav Dimitrov, a Coventry University Transport Design graduate currently working in Italy for one of the most prestigious car manufacturers in the world.

The BMW T1 Motorsport is a supercar designed to celebrate BMW's achievements in motorsport.

The BMW T1 Motorsport was originally planned more like GT sports car, but the final result was a pure supercar powered by a mid-mounted engine V12. The concept features a lightweight carbon fibre monocoque chassis, double wishbone suspension - front and rear. The exhaust pipes are positioned at the back-top of the car just above the suspension and the engine bay - like F1 race cars.

The T1 Motorsport has an unusual feature built into the roof panel and windscreen. The panel is hinged at the front of the chassis – just in front of the windscreen. When entering or exiting the car this panel lifts-up, at the same time the doors open sideways in a conventional manner - this setup ensures easy access to the interior. To keep the whole carbon-fibre chassis working as a single rigid shell, when closed this panel integrates completely with the carbon fibre chassis and the body of the concept.

The interior of the BMW T1 Motorsport concept is inspired by mechanical components and parts - it is balanced between innovation, design and functionality. The interior is upholstered and trimmed in white & blue colors, and is designed to offer the best experience and performance for the driver.

The T1 Motorsport concept is finished in plain white only, with racing stickers including the M-Power motorsport stripes.

If the BMW T1 Motorsport were to be manufactured it would be in a limited run of just 499 units. 400 units available for the market, 99 units factory homologated for racing activities. Maximum speed would exceed 230 mph (370 km/h).

AUDI Sportback Concept

The Audi A7 had been rumored as Audi's version of the Mercedes-Benz CLS. But after seeing the Audi Sportback Concept in the flesh at the Detroit Auto Show, it's obvious Audi is taking a bit of a different tack with its stylish new luxury car.
For starters, the Audi Sportback Concept is a 5-door hatchback, unlike the "4-door coupes" from Mercedes with its CLS and Volkswagen with its Passat-based CC. Audi says the 5-door body style was chosen after the sales success achieved by the 5-door A3 Sportback. The attempt with the Sportback Concept was to achieve the coveted "coupe-like silhouette" while still providing the car with a user-friendly rear hatch. Audi says the 4-seat Sportback Concept also serves notice that it will not be limiting Sportback designs to the compact segment.

Besides serving as a preview for the upcoming A7 production model, Audi says the Sportback Concept also offers a glimpse of Audi's "future design vocabulary." We're guessing that vocabulary will include the Sportback Concept's new interpretation of Audi's single-frame grille. Another interesting design feature are side mirrors inspired by the upturned tips on jet wings.

The Audi Sportback Concept is based on the latest architecture that underpins the new A4 sedan, A5 Coupe and Q5 crossover. Sizewise, the Sportback Concept is about 1.5 in. longer than an A6. Using Audi's new platform, designers were able to move the front axle forward for better weight distribution. The suspension makes much use of aluminum to reduce unsprung weight, together with carbon-ceramic brake rotors — 15.0 in. up front (clamped by 6-piston calipers) and 14.0-in. rears.
The Sportback Concept's shock absorbers use Audi's continuous damping control (CDC) that adjust to the manner in which the car is being driven, as well as to the road surface. Of note, the Sportback Concept marks Audi's first use of electromechanical steering in a car with a longitudinally-mounted engine.

That engine is an exceptionally clean 3.0-liter V-6 turbodiesel, the same engine available this March in the Q7 SUV. Sensors in the engine's combustion chambers enable a precise regulation of the combustion processes, and their use marks a first for any engine in the world. AdBlue injection enables the 3.0 TDI to pass even California's stringent emissions requirements.

The 3.0 TDI's 225 bhp (DIN) and 406 lb.-ft. of torque, combined with Audi's 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive propel the Sportback Concept to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 7 sec., according to Audi. It also achieves an average fuel economy of 37 mpg.

Due to the Sportback Concept's architecture, an Audi source told us the car can accomodate a 10-cylinder engine, such as the one used in the S8. But the most likely engine for the U.S. market appears to be Audi's new 3.0 TFSI supercharged V-6, with between 300–333 bhp.

Concept Cars: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is the replacement supercar for the Mercedes-Benz Mclaren SLR. However unlike the SLR which was futuristic in its design, the SLS AMG is distinctly retro and uses the 1955 300SL for inspiration - including the trademark 'gullwing' doors. However both the SLR and SLS share the same mid-front engine layout and the passenger compartment is pushed to the rear of the car.

"Mercedes-Benz is presenting an exhilarating super sports car in the guise of the new SLS AMG, which is bound to set the pulses of all car enthusiasts racing that extra bit faster. The SLS AMG is emotion pure and simple for the Mercedes-Benz brand and is set to become one of the most alluring sports cars of our era", says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

At the 2009 New York Motor Show Mercedes-Benz revealed the first sketches of the new car and also a set of photos revealing the interior in its production form.

The SLS AMG is the first Mercedes-Benz car with an aluminium chassis and body. This lightweight construction means that the overall curb weight of the vehicle is 1,620 kilograms (3,571 lbs).

Powering the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is an AMG developed, naturally aspirated, 6.3 litre V8 which produces 571 horsepower @ 6,800 rpm. Connected to the engine via a carbon fibre shaft is a rear mounted, dual-clutch, 7 speed, automatic transmission with four different settings for use depending on the driving conditions or driver preferences. The rear mounted transmission also helps the SLS AMG achieve a front/rear weight distribution of 48/52 percent. This drivetrain gives the car a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of just 3.8 seconds, and a top speed of 195 mph (315 km/h).

Concept Cars: Ferrari Concept 2008 by Luca Serafini

Luca Serafini, a designer based in Modena, Italy produced this concept as a theoretical replacement for the Ferrari F430. Working independently from Ferrari, Serafini created the Ferrari Concept 2008 as a computer model. Proposed power for the concept could come from a mid-mounted V8, like the F430.

When designing the Ferrari Concept 2008 Serafini looked at classic Ferrari models in order to come up with an original design which differed from the current cars, while also being instantly identifiable as a Ferrari. From almost every angle the concept is distinctly Ferrari-esque. However the large oval grille, while attractive, is more akin to a Maserati grille than a Ferrari unit.

Overall the Ferrari Concept 2008 is an impressive design, superior in many ways to the 2008 Ferrari California, a production model which was unveiled at almost the same time.
